Tomeu Llabres champions Giro Ros, a near-extinct native grape of Mallorca, at Ca’n Verdura. This bottling ferments in French oak for eight months, giving a fresh island white of citrus, white flowers and a saline, textured finish.
Description
Ca'n Verdura, run by Tomeu Llabres in the D.O. Binissalem Mallorca, is central to the revival of Giro Ros, an indigenous white grape that nearly disappeared after phylloxera and now survives in a handful of old parcels. The variety gives pale, delicate wines with fresh acidity, well suited to the warm Balearic climate where the sea moderates the heat. This cuvee is fermented in French oak barrels and held there for eight months, a choice that builds texture and a rounder mouthfeel through fine lees contact while keeping the oak flavour restrained. The old parcels and low yields concentrate the fruit. The colour is pale with a green tint. The nose is fresh and floral, with lemon, white peach, white flowers and a faint aniseed note. The palate is light-bodied but textured, the barrel lending gentle weight rather than obvious wood, with a saline, mineral finish that speaks of the island. This is a rare white and a clear expression of a grape few producers still work with. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
