Ca’n Verdura is a Mallorcan red led by the native Manto Negro with Merlot, Callet, Syrah and more. Made by Tomeu Llabrés in D.O. Binissalem and aged briefly in oak and steel, it is a fresh, perfumed island red of red berries and warm herb.
Description
Ca'n Verdura is a red from D.O. Binissalem Mallorca made by Ca'n Verdura Viticultors, the project Tomeu Llabrés began in 2012 in a small garage in Binissalem. Trained as an oenologist in Tarragona and schooled in the island's native grapes alongside Francesc Grimalt before time in Priorat, Llabrés builds the wine around Manto Negro, the indigenous Mallorcan variety, with Merlot, Callet, Syrah, Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Binissalem sits inland on the Mallorcan plain, where limestone and clay soils and a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes ripen the fruit while keeping freshness. Manto Negro is a pale, perfumed grape that gives light colour and fragrant red fruit, supported here by the structure of the international varieties. The wine spends five months in American oak and five in stainless steel tank, a short maturation that rounds the texture while keeping the fruit bright. The colour is bright mid-ruby. The nose shows fresh red berries, cherry and plum with white flowers, dried herb and a stony edge. The palate is light to medium bodied with soft tannin and fresh acidity, the finish clean and savoury. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you like. Good with lighter meats and the table.
