Description
Can Sumoi Xarel·lo is a natural white from the mountain estate that Raventós i Blanc set up in the Penedès after leaving D.O. Cava in 2012. The farm covers 400 hectares at 600 metres of altitude in Montmell, with 20 hectares planted to native Parellada, Sumoll and Xarel·lo. Height is the key here: the elevation brings cool nights that hold acidity and slow ripening, giving a fresher, more mineral style than lowland Penedès. Xarel·lo itself is a firm, structured white grape with natural grip. The wine is made with native yeasts in the natural style and rested three months on its lees, which adds a subtle creamy weight and rounds the texture while keeping the fruit direct. The colour is pale yellow with a clean brightness. The nose shows green apple and fennel with citrus behind, and the palate is fresh and lightly textured with a stony, mineral finish and the grape's characteristic backbone. Serve it around 10 degrees.
