Description
Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa is a young natural red from Can Sumoi, the mountain estate of the Raventós i Blanc family in the Penedès. It blends Garnacha with Sumoll, an old, high-acid Catalan variety being recovered for its freshness and perfume. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically at altitude in the Montmell hills, where cool nights and a wide diurnal range preserve acidity and aromatic detail and the poor mountain soils keep yields low and the wines light and fragrant. The wine is fermented and aged for nine months in stainless steel, with three further months in bottle, and sees no oak. The neutral steel and reductive handling keep the fruit fresh and the tannins fine, while the natural, low-intervention winemaking with indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphur preserves the wine's energy and drinkability. It is bright and light bodied, with red cherry, redcurrant and raspberry, a floral lift and a savoury, herbal, peppery edge. The palate is fresh and juicy, with light tannin and lively acidity, certified biodynamic, natural and vegan. Serve at 13 to 14 degrees, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken and lighter dishes. It is an easy, food-friendly red.
