Description
Can Sumoi is Pepe Raventos's mountain project in the Penedes, where he restored a neglected estate dating to 1645 and its old native vines at 600 metres above sea level. Altitude is the defining factor here: the elevation brings cool nights and a wide diurnal range, so the grapes ripen slowly and keep bright natural acidity, and the poor mountain soils limit vigour and concentrate the fruit. The wine is organically grown and vegan, made in a fresh young style without oak so the focus stays on fruit and site. Garnacha Blanca can turn broad and low in acid in warmer sites, but this cool elevation keeps it taut and mineral. The colour is pale straw. The nose shows green apple, white peach and white flowers, and the palate is light and dry, driven by crisp acidity and a saline, stony freshness that carries into a clean finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
