Can Rich farms organic Monastrell on Ibiza, with Álvaro Pérez Navazo now directing the cellar. This young rosé is pale and dry, showing strawberry, citrus peel and a coastal saltiness. A Mediterranean wine made for the table and the heat.
Description
Can Rich is one of the founding organic estates on Ibiza, and recent vintages reflect the precision viticulture brought in by technical director Álvaro Pérez Navazo. The Monastrell grows on warm, free-draining island soils within reach of the sea, where saline breezes and intense sunlight shape ripe fruit that is picked early to keep the wine fresh. The rosé is made by gentle pressing of Monastrell, whose dark skins surrender colour and red fruit fast, followed by a cool fermentation in stainless steel that locks in the aromatics and keeps the texture clean and free of tannin. In the glass it is pale pink, with strawberry and cherry fruit, a twist of citrus peel and a hint of white flowers. The palate is dry and lively, the warm-climate fruit framed by sharp acidity and a savoury, slightly salty finish that speaks of the island setting. There is no wood, so the wine reads bright and immediate. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif, or with grilled seafood, rice dishes and light Mediterranean salads.
