Arantxa de Cara and Marc Milà make this Catalan orange wine from Xarel·lo, Moscatel and Xarel·lo Rojo. Eight months in clay gives it dried apricot, orange marmalade and a firm grip, an organic, vegan wine that changes with each vintage.
Description
Can Descregut is run by Arantxa de Cara and Marc Milà in Catalonia, who treat each vintage as its own wine and adapt their winemaking to what the harvest brings. This orange wine blends Xarel·lo, Moscatel de Alejandría and Xarel·lo Rojo, native and aromatic varieties farmed organically. The Mediterranean climate gives warm, dry growing conditions, while the local soils and old vine material keep concentration in the fruit. The wine is made with extended skin contact, the juice macerating on the skins to pull out colour, aromatic phenolics and the structural tannin that defines a serious orange wine. It then ages for eight months in clay amphorae, vessels that allow slow, gentle oxygen exchange without the flavour of oak, building texture and a savoury, mineral edge. Made as a natural, vegan wine with minimal intervention, it shows an amber colour. The nose is apricot, orange marmalade and dried herbs, with beeswax and a stony base. The palate is dry and firmly textured, with citrus peel and almond over an earthy finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees in a white wine glass. It pairs well with roast pork and hard cheese.
