Can Blau Blau is a Montsant red from the Gil family at Cellers Can Blau in El Molar, blending Cariñena, Garnacha and Syrah. Aged four months in French oak, it shows ripe plum, black pepper and a stony, herbal edge from the region’s mountain-cooled vineyards.
Description
Can Blau Blau is a red from D.O. Montsant made by Cellers Can Blau, founded in 2003 by the Gil family in El Molar and part of the Orowines group. It blends Cariñena and Garnacha with Syrah grown in a Mediterranean climate carrying a continental influence, where the surrounding mountains form a barrier against the sea and create a wide swing between day and night temperatures. That diurnal range slows ripening and preserves acidity and aromatic freshness, while cold winters and dry, hot summers concentrate the fruit. The poor schist and clay soils of Montsant restrict vigour and push the old vines to send roots deep, lending the wine its mineral grip. After fermentation it spends four months in French oak, enough to soften the tannins and add a light spice and smoke without masking the fruit. This magnum is deep and full bodied, with ripe plum and dark cherry, black pepper and liquorice, and an earthy, stony undertone. The tannins are firm but ripe and the finish is long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, alongside grilled and roasted red meats.
