Stupore is the Bolgheri Rosso from Campo Alle Comete, a Tenute Capaldo estate on the Tuscan coast. A Bordeaux blend with Syrah, aged twelve months in oak, it shows ripe blackcurrant, plum and a peppery, structured edge.
Description
Campo Alle Comete is a Tuscan estate established in 2013 by the Tenute Capaldo group in the DOC of Bolgheri, on the Maremma coast in the province of Livorno. Stupore, the wine the estate first introduced itself with, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the international varieties that built Bolgheri's reputation. The coastal location, with warm days tempered by sea breezes off the Tyrrhenian and free draining soils, ripens these grapes fully while the maritime influence keeps the acidity intact. The wine is aged twelve months in oak barrels, which through slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins of the Cabernet and Petit Verdot and adds vanilla, cedar and spice while binding the four varieties into a single frame. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry over red currant, black pepper from the Syrah and a tobacco and oak edge. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe fruit, firm but rounded tannins, fresh acidity and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting ahead. It suits grilled and roast red meats, lamb and aged cheeses.
