Description
Camins del Priorat is the entry red from the Álvaro Palacios winery in D.O.Q. Priorat, in Gratallops, a blend led by Garnacha and Cariñena with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The fruit is drawn from eight villages across the appellation, with vines ranging from 11 to 41 years of age, all rooted in the region's defining llicorella, the broken slate that forces roots deep for water and lends Priorat reds their mineral, stony grip. The climate is hot and dry, tempered by altitude and the cooling effect of the steep terraced hillsides, which preserves acidity and freshness in such ripe fruit. Ageing is a short 4 months in French oak barrels, enough to round the tannins and add light spice while keeping the wine fresh and fruit-led. The result is a deep red with a nose of cherry and raspberry over subtle spice and a stony, mineral edge from the slate. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe red and dark fruit, fine grippy tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted. It suits grilled lamb, roast red meats and mushroom dishes.
