Description
Camí de Pesseroles is one of the flagship reds of Mas Martinet, the Priorat estate founded by José Luís Pérez, a pioneer of the region's revival, and now run by the Pérez family. It blends Garnacha and Cariñena, the two indigenous varieties that built Priorat's reputation, named after the old royal road that linked Gratallops and Porrera. The vines grow on llicorella, the broken slate soil typical of the appellation, which drains hard and drives the roots deep, holding yields very low and lending the wine its dark fruit and stony minerality. The hilly terrain and cooler nights give a wide diurnal range that preserves acidity and freshness in a hot, sunny climate. Farming is organic. The wine is aged eighteen months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange settles the tannins and adds a frame of spice and toast around the fruit. The colour is deep and concentrated. The nose carries blackberry, blueberry and black cherry with liquorice, pepper, graphite and oak spice. The palate is full bodied and structured, with substantial ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted well ahead. It suits roast red meats and game.
