Description
This is a Cameronbridge single grain, chosen and bottled by Douglas Laing, a 45 year old distilled in 1978, from cask 17713 and bottled at 54.6%. The outturn was 98 bottles. Cameronbridge is a vast Lowland grain distillery in Fife, working since 1824. It is one of the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year.
It was worked through column stills from wheat, for the light, sweet grain spirit Cameronbridge is known for. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding coconut and vanilla. Past thirty years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. The clean grain base lets the cask speak clearly across the years. Pot stills for malt whisky were removed in 1929, leaving Cameronbridge a pure grain plant. The site was expanded again in 2007 in a forty million pound investment. The Haig name has been tied to Scottish distilling since the 17th century.
At a full 54.6% it is intense yet sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives toffee, vanilla and a soft oil. A crème brûlée and a polished oak give it depth. Toffee and vanilla see out a long finish. This is an aged single grain from Diageo's largest distillery.
