Description
Bottled by Signatory Vintage, this Cameronbridge, aged 39 year old distilled in 1976, from cask 900007 and bottled at 49.8%. The outturn was 303 bottles. Cameronbridge is a Lowland grain distillery in Fife, founded in 1824 by John Haig and now the largest distillery in Scotland. Its single grain has long been sold as Cameron Brig, and since 2014 as Haig Club.
The spirit was run off the distillery's three column stills from a wheat mash, to build a soft, sweet grain character. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla and crème brûlée. At this age it is rich and waxy, the sweet grain folded into a buttery, oily body. Continuous distillation gives a light, clean spirit, so the cask drives much of the flavour. It is among the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year. John Haig's cousin Robert Stein invented the continuous still, and Cameronbridge was among the first to run one.
At its natural 49.8% it is concentrated. The ex-Bourbon gives toffee, vanilla and a soft oil. Soft toffee and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. The close is soft, dessert sweet over oak. This is a Lowland single grain from Fife.
