Description
From Douglas Laing comes this Cameronbridge matured to 37 year old distilled in 1984, from cask DL 15421 and bottled at 54.4%. 274 bottles in all. Founded in 1824 by John Haig, Cameronbridge is the oldest and largest grain distillery in Scotland. A founding member of the Distillers Company in 1877, it is now Diageo's largest distillery.
It was drawn from continuous Coffey stills for a light grain spirit, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, American oak giving coconut and toffee. Long ageing brings a deep coconut, toffee and a mellow, polished oak. Long ageing turns light grain into a deep, oily, dessert sweet whisky. As well as whisky, it makes the neutral spirit for Gordon's and Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka. Its single grain has long been sold as Cameron Brig, and since 2014 as Haig Club. Water comes from Loch Leven, the mash from wheat, the spirit off three column stills.
At 54.4%, undiluted, it is deep and sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, toffee and a creamy caramel. A butterscotch and a creamy oak lift it. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is Cameronbridge's light, sweet single grain.
