Description
Douglas Laing selected this Cameronbridge matured to 30 year old distilled in 1992, from cask DL 16909 and bottled at 51.5%. 242 bottles in all. Set in Fife, Cameronbridge has made grain whisky since 1824, the oldest plant of its kind in Scotland. As well as grain whisky, it makes the neutral spirit for Gordon's and Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka.
Distilled continuously in column stills from wheat, on Loch Leven water, giving a clean, mellow grain whisky. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding coconut and vanilla. By this age the sweet spirit rounds into vanilla, coconut and a soft oil. Decades turn a light spirit into something rich, oily and tropical. Its single grain has long been sold as Cameron Brig, and since 2014 as Haig Club. Water comes from Loch Leven, the mash from wheat, the spirit off three column stills. It is among the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year.
At its natural 51.5% it is concentrated. The ex-Bourbon gives vanilla, cream and a dessert sweetness. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is the clean, sweet grain of Cameronbridge.
