Description
Bottled by Cadenhead's, this Cambus, a 26 year old distilled in 1988 and bottled at 47.5%. A release of 288 bottles. A lost Lowland grain distillery near Alloa, Cambus distilled from around 1806 until 1993. Closed in 1993, the site is now a Diageo cooperage beside the Blackgrange warehouses.
It was worked through continuous column stills from grain, for the light, sweet grain spirit Cambus was known for. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, American oak giving coconut and toffee. Beyond twenty five years the grain grows deep and oily, coconut, butterscotch and crème brûlée over polished oak. The clean grain base lets the cask speak clearly across long years. With no new spirit since 1993, every bottle draws on a finite, dwindling stock. Cambus was founded around 1806 by John Moubray on the River Devon in Clackmannanshire, one of Scotland's oldest grain distilleries. It was one of the five grain distilleries that founded the Distillers Company Limited in 1877.
At a full 47.5% it is intense yet sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives toffee, vanilla and a soft oil. It is clean and sweet, the grain spirit shining through. It closes long, sweet and oily. This is an old single grain from a closed Lowland distillery.
