Description
Onbria is Calalta's straight-down-the-line Cabernet Franc, made from five hectares farmed organically in the hills just outside Bassano del Grappa, in the municipality of Mussolente in the Veneto. The vineyards sit between 150 and 200 metres on ferruginous, iron-rich soils, a terroir that suits Cabernet Franc's naturally fresh, herbal character. Cool nights off the surrounding hills hold the acidity and aromatic lift, and the iron-bearing soils contribute to the wine's savoury, mineral edge. This is the youthful, fruit-forward expression of the grape: nine months in stainless steel keeps oxygen out and preserves bright, primary fruit and freshness, with no oak to cover the variety's leafy, peppery signature. Expect a bright ruby colour and a nose of fresh red berries, redcurrant and cherry lifted by black pepper and a green, herbal note of thyme, with a light earthiness behind. The palate is succulent and medium-bodied, with fine tannin, crisp acidity and a fresh, peppery finish. Serve lightly chilled at 15 to 16 degrees in a medium glass. It is an easy, versatile red for grilled meats, pork and tomato-based dishes.
