A 39 Year Old Colombian Dictador single cask from 1980, bottled at cask strength by Cadenhead’s, dense with caramel, brown sugar, coffee, nuts and raisin, with a whisky like, faintly peated finish at a powerful 59.9%.
Description
This long aged Dictador comes from Scotch institution Cadenhead's, who selected a single cask of Colombian rum distilled from molasses on both pot and column stills at Destileria Colombiana. Drawn from a 1980 vintage and bottled at a full 59.9%, it pushes the rich Colombian profile into deeper, more intense territory than the standard distillery range, with the pot still contribution adding weight.
Nearly four decades of maturation give a dense nose of caramel, brown sugar, coffee and raisin, leading to a nutty, oily palate of caramel and dried fruit, then a savoury, lightly peated, whisky like finish of spice, cocoa and a salty edge. It carries real sweetness and a sticky richness, so it is best understood as a sweeter, contemplative pour rather than a lean one. A heavyweight Colombian sipper for experienced palates who want age, strength and depth in equal measure.
