Description
Ca N'Estruc, the first winery registered in the D.O. Catalunya, makes this young red at Esparreguera in the hills west of Barcelona, blending Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah. Farmed organically and biodynamically, it is built for early drinking, with little or no oak so the fruit stays fresh and the alcohol sits at a moderate 13.5 percent. The warm inland Catalan climate ripens the Garnacha and Cariñena fully, while cooler nights in the hills keep the acidity bright and the wine light on its feet. The Syrah adds colour and a peppery edge. Made without heavy extraction or long ageing, it keeps a juicy, primary character. It pours bright, translucent ruby. The nose is fresh and perfumed, with red berries, cherry and a touch of plum over black pepper and dried herbs. The palate is light to medium bodied and juicy, the tannins soft, the acidity lively, and a clean, faintly earthy finish. This is an everyday red that rewards a light chill. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees in a standard glass, no decanting needed. It suits charcuterie, grilled pork and tomato-based dishes.
