Ca’ Lojera makes this Lugana from Trebbiano di Lugana grown on the clay soils south of Lake Garda. Fermented and aged in stainless steel to keep it fresh, it shows lemon, white peach and a signature bitter-almond finish.
Description
Ca' Lojera is a respected family estate in Lugana, the appellation on the southern shore of Lake Garda that straddles Lombardy and the Veneto. This wine is made entirely from Trebbiano di Lugana, the local name for the Turbiana grape, grown on the region's heavy calcareous clay. That dense, mineral-rich soil is the key to Lugana's character: it retains water through the summer and gives the wines their notable structure and depth for a fresh white, while the tempering effect of the great lake extends the season and preserves acidity. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel with no oak, a choice that keeps the fruit pure and lets the grape's texture and stony line come through. A period on the fine lees adds a little breadth to the mid palate. Expect a pale straw colour, a nose of lemon, white peach and white flowers, and a dry, medium-bodied palate with good weight, a mineral core and the faintly bitter-almond finish that marks the variety. Serve chilled at around 10C. It suits freshwater and sea fish alike.
