Ca’ Bianca makes this Roero Arneis in Piedmont from the native Arneis grape, grown on the sandy hills of the Roero. Unoaked and fresh, it shows white flowers, pear, white peach and a gentle almond note on the finish.
Description
Ca' Bianca Roero Arneis is a white from the DOCG Roero in Piedmont, made from Arneis, the region's native white grape. The winery has worked these hills since 1950 and farms around 39 hectares. The Roero lies on the left bank of the Tanaro, where the soils are markedly sandy over marl, lighter and more free draining than the clay of the Langhe across the river, and it is this sand that gives Arneis its perfume and soft, approachable texture. Arneis ripens early and holds only moderate acidity, so the fruit is picked at the right moment and fermented cool in stainless steel with no oak to keep the delicate aromatics intact. The name means little rascal in the local dialect, a nod to how tricky the grape is to grow. Expect a nose of white flowers, pear and white peach with chamomile, and a palate that is dry and softly textured, closing on the bitter almond note that is the signature of the variety. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees in a white glass. It works as an aperitif and with lighter fish and salads.
