Ca’ Bianca makes this lightly sparkling Brachetto d’Acqui from hillside vines around Alice Bel Colle in Piedmont. Low in alcohol at 5.5 percent, it is sweet and gently frizzante, with red berries, cherry and a clear scent of roses.
Description
Ca' Bianca farms 40 hectares of hillside vineyards around Alice Bel Colle in the Alessandria province of Piedmont, working under DOCG Brachetto d'Acqui. The vines grow on sedimentary loam soils at over 100 feet of altitude, where the calcareous component and the diurnal swing between warm days and cool nights preserve the grape's floral aromatics and natural acidity. Brachetto is an aromatic red variety, and the wine is made in a sweet, lightly sparkling style. Fermentation is stopped early by chilling, which leaves natural grape sugar in the wine and keeps the alcohol low at 5.5 percent, while a gentle second fermentation in pressurised tank under the Charmat method gives the soft frizzante bubble. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose is openly floral, with rose and other white flowers over fresh red berries and cherry. The palate is sweet and frothy but light, with plum and a touch of honey, and the fizz keeps it clean rather than heavy. The wine is made for early drinking and the 2025 is at its freshest now. Serve cold at around 6 to 8 degrees. It works as a sweet aperitif and is the regional match for strawberries and light fruit puddings.
