Description
Casks 5891 and 5892 sit consecutively in Gordon & MacPhail's filling ledger from 1989 production at Bunnahabhain, sister vessels from the same parcel held alongside each other across decades of maturation. This is cask 5891, bottled at 34 years old in 2024 at 47.3% natural strength, drawn before the longer-aged sister cask #5892 that came out as a 35 year old release in 2025.
Spirit distilled in 1989 sits well inside the Highland Distillers ownership era of Bunnahabhain, before the 1999 Edrington acquisition and the subsequent production lull. Casks from this period have produced some of the more interesting long-aged independent releases reaching market in 2024 and 2025, with G&M's deep relationships across the Scotch industry giving the bottler access to stock that outlived multiple ownership transitions in warehouse.
The cask is American oak, which on a 34 year old delivers deep vanillin, polished oak, soft tropical fruit and the varnish-and-old-furniture aromatic that very long bourbon-style maturation produces. The distillate's oily salinity from the Margadale Burn spring source has had three decades to integrate into the wood signature, producing a quiet, contemplative spirit. The 47.3% bottling sits just above the conventional cask strength threshold and carries the cask aromatics softly without water; small additions release the deeper tropical-fruit character. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered, single cask.
