Description
The Connoisseurs Choice is Gordon & MacPhail's longest-running independent bottling line, launched in 1968 as one of the very first dedicated single-malt indie ranges in the Scotch industry. The Cask Strength tier within Connoisseurs Choice carries individually selected casks bottled at natural strength rather than the diluted core-range presentation. Cask 5453 is one of those: spirit distilled at Bunnahabhain in 1998, held for 26 years in a single American oak cask, bottled in 2025 at 50.6%.
Spirit from 1998 sits in the late Highland Distillers era of Bunnahabhain's ownership history, distilled before the 1999 acquisition by Edrington and the cask sold on through the subsequent ownership transitions to G&M's inventory. Long American oak maturation on Bunnahabhain spirit produces a very different profile from the distillery's typical sherry-led house style. Bourbon-derived oak transfers vanilla, coconut and toasted-corn lactones during the long maturation, and the heavy char layer adds a subtle caramelised-sugar presence underneath.
At 26 years, the cask wood has fully integrated with the spirit. Expect deep vanilla, polished oak, soft tropical fruit and a touch of old-furniture aromatic from the long wood contact. The Bunnahabhain coastal character runs underneath: oily texture, a gentle maritime salinity from the Sound-side warehouses, and the lightly mineral spring-water signature from the Margadale Burn. The 50.6% natural strength carries the cask aromatics cleanly without water; a small drop opens the deeper notes. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered.
