Description
Malts of Scotland is a German independent bottler run by Thomas Ewers out of Paderborn, established in 2008. The label has built its reputation on sherry-matured single casks and a willingness to bottle older, more expensive parcels than most of its peers. Releases carry the MoS prefix on the cask number followed by a four-digit serial; cask MoS 25038 is one of their 2025 releases, an 18 year old Bunnahabhain distilled in 2007 and bottled at 55.5% natural strength. The maturation is in Oloroso sherry. Bunnahabhain's house style is built around long sherry maturation, and the distillery sells substantial quantities of well-aged sherry-cask spirit into the independent market, MoS being one of the regular buyers for that kind of stock. At eighteen years old, the cask has had time to deliver classic Oloroso character without the heavy concentration that very long sherry maturation can produce. The age is also the sweet spot where sherry-matured Bunnahabhain develops its leather-and-walnut depth without losing the spirit's underlying coastal oiliness. Expected profile sits in the comfortable middle of the sherry-Bunnahabhain spectrum: stewed dark fruit, walnut, toasted oak, a touch of leather and tobacco, with the natural maritime salinity from the Margadale Burn spring water cutting through the richness. The natural strength means the spirit's oiliness comes through cleanly on the palate before water lifts the sherry aromatics. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered, single cask.
