Description
The 12 Year Old is the Bunnahabhain core range anchor, running continuously across the distillery's modern history and surviving multiple ownership transitions and brand refreshes. The current iteration draws from a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 46.3% with no chill-filtration and no added colour. That 46.3% strength point was set during the major redesign that moved the core range from 40% to its current presentation, establishing the format that the rest of the distillery's age-statement releases now follow.
The dual-cask programme defines the bottle's character. Ex-bourbon casks supply the vanilla, light coconut and toasted-corn lactones that American oak brings to twelve-year maturation, providing the spirit-forward base. Oloroso sherry layers nutty walnut, dried fig and the deeper sherry warmth on top, producing the balance the distillery's house style is known for: sherry-influenced rather than sherry-dominated. The combination preserves the underlying Bunnahabhain coastal signature where a heavier sherry-only programme might overwrite it.
The 46.3% bottling allows enough body to carry both cask influences clearly. Expect oily texture, light maritime brine, gentle salinity from the Sound-side warehouses, and the underlying mineral spring-water signature from the Margadale Burn that runs through the distillery's production at any age. The 12 Year Old sits as the entry point into the Bunnahabhain core range and is generally the starting reference for understanding the distillery's house style across the broader catalogue.
