This organic Chianti Classico comes from Antico Podere Casanova, working Sangiovese on Tuscan hillsides with a history tied to the Buonarroti estate. Eight months in oak give a fresh, savoury red of sour cherry, red currant and dried herbs.
Description
Antico Podere Casanova makes this naturally vinified Chianti Classico from Sangiovese grown on the clay and galestro soils of central Tuscany. The estate, organically farmed, traces its land back to the family of Michelangelo Buonarroti. Sangiovese carries high acidity and a moderate but grippy tannin, traits the stony galestro subsoil and the continental climate reinforce through warm days and cool nights that preserve freshness across the season. This is the standard Chianti Classico rather than the Riserva, with a shorter eight months in oak barrels, so the fruit stays bright and the oak sits in support rather than leading. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows sour cherry, red currant, plum and dried herbs over a savoury earth and tobacco base. The palate is medium bodied, the acidity lively, the tannin fine and dry, finishing clean on tart red fruit. This is a versatile food red rather than a wine for long cellaring. Serve at 16 degrees. Its acidity makes it a natural match for tomato-based Tuscan cooking and grilled meats.
