Bruno Rochard makes Petit Clou as a natural Cabernet Franc at Domaine de Mirebeau in the Loire. Worked organically with minimal intervention, it is light, fresh and expressive, with crunchy red berries, red currant and a leafy, herbal edge.
Description
Bruno Rochard settled at Domaine de Mirebeau in Rablay-sur-Layon, in the Loire, taking on six hectares planted with Chenin, Cabernet Franc and Grolleau. He converted the vineyards to organic farming under Ecocert certification and works with minimal intervention, aiming for original and very expressive wines. Petit Clou is his natural red from Cabernet Franc, certified organic and vegan. The Loire is at the cool, northern limit for the grape, and that climate is what gives Cabernet Franc its bright acidity and leafy, herbal character rather than dense ripeness. With little to no added sulphur and no new oak, the wine keeps its raw fruit and a faint reductive lift typical of natural winemaking. Expect a translucent ruby colour and a fresh nose of raspberry, red currant and cherry, threaded with dried herbs, rhubarb and a touch of earth. The palate is light bodied and juicy, with fine tannins and a tart, refreshing finish. Serve cool, around 14 to 15 degrees, which suits its light frame. It works with charcuterie, roast chicken and grilled vegetables.
