Description
Bruno Duchene came from the Loire to the Cote Vermeille in Roussillon and since 2002 has farmed the steep, terraced slopes above Banyuls, where everything is done by hand. This La Luna rosé is a natural wine from Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah grown on the region's dark schist soils within the Collioure appellation. The schist is poor and free-draining, forcing the vines deep for water and concentrating the fruit, while the steep, sun-exposed terraces and the constant Mediterranean wind keep the grapes healthy and the wines saline and fresh. Farming is organic and the cellar work is minimal, with native-yeast fermentation, little or no added sulphur and no fining or filtration, so the wine keeps a direct, unforced character. There is no oak influence. It pours a pale pink. The nose shows red berry, white peach and citrus peel with a dried-herb, garrigue lift. The palate is dry and textured, the stone and red fruit carried by firm acidity and a distinctly saline, mineral finish that reflects the schist and the maritime climate. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
