Brovia make this Barolo from the Rocche di Castiglione cru, Nebbiolo aged two years in large Slavonian oak and eighteen months in bottle. Organic, it shows red cherry, rose, tar and liquorice over fine, firm tannins. A perfumed, traditional Barolo.
Description
Brovia farms the Rocche di Castiglione cru in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo zone in Piedmont, working organically. Rocche is known for elegance and aromatic lift, its sandy-calcareous Sant'Agata marls giving Nebbiolo a perfumed, finer-boned style. Nebbiolo is a late-ripening, high-acid grape with powerful tannins that needs these well-exposed limestone-clay slopes to ripen while keeping freshness. The wine ages 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, whose low surface-to-volume ratio allows slow, measured oxygen exchange that softens the tannins and adds complexity without oak flavour, then 18 months in bottle to settle. Expect a pale garnet colour, a lifted nose of red cherry, dried rose, tar, leather and liquorice, and a palate with high acidity, fine and firm tannins and a long, persistent finish. This is the more aromatic, elegant face of traditional Barolo, built to age. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant well ahead, or cellar it. A wine for rich, slow-cooked food.
