Brovia, a family estate in Castiglione Falletto since 1863, makes this Barolo from Nebbiolo. Aged in large Slavonian oak and rested in bottle, it shows pale colour, dried rose and cherry, earthy depth and the firm, savoury tannins of the appellation.
Description
Brovia has made wine in the heart of Barolo since 1863, based in Castiglione Falletto, one of the eleven villages within the D.O.C.G. This Barolo is made from Nebbiolo, the noble grape of the Langhe, grown on the calcareous marl soils that give Barolo its structure, perfume and ageing potential. The continental climate, with warm days and cool autumn nights, drives the long, slow ripening Nebbiolo needs to develop its aromatics while keeping its high acidity and firm tannins. The wine is aged for around two years in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional vessel whose lower surface-to-wine ratio allows gentle oxygen exchange that softens the tannins without imparting strong oak flavour, followed by eighteen months in bottle to integrate. The colour is pale garnet. The nose is classic Barolo, with cherry and dried rose over earth, leather, tobacco and dried herbs. The palate is full bodied, with high acidity, firm assertive tannins and a long, savoury finish that rewards cellaring. Serve at 18 degrees and decant for one to two hours. It is built for rich Piedmontese cooking.
