Bristol Uitvlugt (Port Mourant) Port Morant Demerara Rum 1990

Bristol Classic Rum, the long running English specialist in closed and heritage distillery bottlings, drew this from the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, the greenheart still behind the heaviest of all Guyanese marques. Reduced to an easy 46 percent and matured for a quarter century, it trades brute force for poise, the gentler strength letting the fruit and leather come forward.

The molasses spirit, unsweetened, came off the pot still with its trademark anise and dry timber, then a port cask added a layer of dark cherry and dried fruit. The result is woody and herbal with cocoa, leather and a softly medicinal spice that lingers into a tea like finish. The lower proof makes this approachable for whisky drinkers stepping into old Demerara, a slow evening sipper for anyone who values balance and maturity over raw cask strength punch.
