A 37 year old Long Pond from 1985, aged into finesse rather than power, with mango, ripe tropical fruit, burnt sugar, vanilla and coffee, a single cask bottled by Bristol Classic Rum at a measured 49.5%.
Description
Bristol Classic Rum is a long-running English specialist in closed and historic distillery stock, the kind of bottler that deals in liquid history. This Long Pond from the 1985 vintage is a deep example of that brief, a Trelawny pot still rum given 37 years to mellow from raw Wedderburn funk into something polished and fruit-forward.
Distilled from molasses on the double-retort pot still and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at 49.5%, a strength that keeps the intensity intact without scorching. The aromas run to mango, ripe tropical fruit and spicy wood, the palate to vanilla, burnt sugar and barrel, the finish to brown sugar, vanilla and coffee. Decades of ageing have softened the esters to a gentle hum rather than a varnish blast, leaving raisin and dried-fruit sweetness over restrained oak. An elegant, easy-drinking old Jamaican that favours grace over the loud high-ester style.
