A reduced-strength Hampden DOK from Bristol Classic Rum, loaded with overripe tropical fruit, pineapple and ester over light wood and gentle spice, the island’s highest-funk marque softened to 47.5% for relaxed, fruit-forward sipping.
Description
Bristol Classic Rum is a long-running English specialist in closed-distillery and heritage bottlings, and this is a Hampden from the legendary 2009 vintage carrying the DOK marque, Hampden's highest ester recipe at the very top of the scale. Bringing DOK down to a gentler strength is an unusual, accessible move.
Distilled from molasses on a double-retort pot still, it shows pineapple, ester, tropical fruit and varnish on the nose, then sweet pineapple and overripe fruit on the palate before a finish of spice, wood, pineapple and vanilla. Bottled at 47.5% and unsweetened, the reduced proof keeps DOK's trademark funk loud while making it easier to sip, the explosion of fruit lingering without the heat of cask strength. Some find it a touch thin against fiercer DOK releases, but as an approachable window onto Hampden's most intense marque it delivers clean, fruit-driven character.
