Bristol Caroni HTR 1974

Bristol Classic Rum, the long-running English specialist in closed-distillery rum, bottled this 1974 Caroni at 34 years of age. It predates the wider Caroni revival and comes from the legendary Trinidad distillery that ceased production in 2003, a survivor from one of the oldest distilling seasons still found in the glass.

Matured in ex-bourbon oak, the heavy marque shows tar, rubber and petrol as expected, but more than three decades have rounded and quietened them. Dried fruit, leather, dark chocolate and a cooling menthol lift sit alongside the industrial notes, all framed by deep, polished oak. Reduced to 46%, it drinks gently for a Caroni, the dilution sitting easily and letting the age speak. Bottled unsweetened, it is a piece of liquid history and an old-school, savoury sipper for those who want the dirty profile in a calmer, more contemplative register.
