Brigaldara makes this Valpolicella Classico Superiore from a single hillside site, Case Vecie, in Veneto. A Corvina-led blend aged in foudres, it shows sour cherry, dried herbs and a savoury, peppery finish with fresh acidity.
Description
Brigaldara farms in the classic heartland of Valpolicella in Veneto, where north-south facing valleys hold vineyards worked since Etruscan times. Under owner and winemaker Stefano Cesari, the estate practises respectful, sustainable agriculture. Case Vecie is a single-site Valpolicella Classico Superiore built on the regional trio of Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone, grown on the limestone-rich hillside soils of the Classico zone. The elevated valley sites and cooling night air preserve the bright acidity that defines fine Valpolicella. Unlike the estate's Amarone, this is a fresh dry red, aged twelve months in foudres, large old oak casks that add structure and slow oxygenation without overt wood flavour, integrating the tannins while keeping the fruit clear. Expect a bright ruby colour and a nose of sour cherry, red berries and plum with dried herbs, black pepper and a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with fresh acidity, a slightly bitter cherry-stone edge and fine tannins on a long, dry finish. Serve at around 16 to 17 degrees, lightly chilled in summer. It suits roast and grilled meats, mushroom dishes and hard cheeses.
