Mengoba make Brezo Blanco from Godello and Doña Blanca across several Bierzo plots including Valtuille and Villafranca. Fermented young, it is clean and precise, with white fruit, nectarine, citrus and a savoury hint of bay leaf on a balanced palate.
Description
Brezo Blanco is a white from D.O. Bierzo made by Mengoba, blending Godello with Doña Blanca from several plots across the appellation, including Carracedo, Valtuille, Villafranca del Bierzo and Espanillo. Drawing on different sites lets the winery balance the fruit, with the cooler, higher plots keeping acidity firm and the warmer ones adding ripeness. Bierzo has a mild climate with steady humidity, sitting between the Atlantic influence of Galicia and the drier continental plateau, which suits both grapes. The wine is fermented young with no oak, a method that keeps the fruit primary and the palate clean and precise. Godello gives body and stone fruit while Doña Blanca adds floral lift and freshness. The wine is pale straw with green highlights. The nose is clean and well defined, with white fruit, nectarine and citrus over flowers and a savoury hint of bay leaf. The palate is balanced and flavourful, the fruit carried on fresh acidity to a dry, faintly herbal finish. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It works with white fish, shellfish, green salads and roast chicken.
