500 Cuts Coconut and Vanilla is a flavoured rum from Brewdog Distilling Co. in the UK, built on molasses spirit and bottled at 40%. Coconut and vanilla rums are a crowded, often cloying category, but this one earns goodwill for being made with a lighter, more natural touch than its peers.

The flavouring is front and centre but well handled, the nose velvety with coconut, caramel and vanilla, the palate carrying coconut, vanilla, milk chocolate and caramel, then a warm finish with hazelnut joining the coconut and vanilla. It tastes less sweet in the mouth than feared and avoids the usual artificial edge. It remains, honestly, a sweet flavoured rum made for easy sipping, pina coladas and dessert style serves, but within that lane it is a notably clean and competent example, the kind that even sceptics of the style can enjoy.
