Description
Bott Saint-Joseph Rouge is made by Graeme and Julie Bott, two former Ogier winemakers who built their Northern Rhône estate from scratch. Saint-Joseph runs along the right bank of the Rhône on steep granite slopes, where decomposed granite soils and a continental climate give Syrah its peppery, mineral character and bright red fruit. The vines face the morning sun, ripening the fruit steadily while cool nights hold the acidity. A share of whole bunches in the fermentation adds aromatic lift and a fine tannic frame, and the wine is raised for around 15 months in oak barrels that lend structure and gentle spice rather than overt wood. It is deep red with violet reflections, showing sweet spice, blackberry, raspberry and cracked pepper over a smoky, granitic base, with supple tannins and a fresh, savoury finish. At 13 percent alcohol it stays poised and food friendly. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, lightly decanted, with roast lamb, grilled sausages or a peppered steak.
