Description
Graeme and Julie Bott farm in the northern Rhône, where they met working for a leading Côte-Rôtie producer before founding their own estate. This Saint-Joseph Blanc blends Roussanne and Marsanne, the classic white pair of the northern Rhône, grown on the granite slopes that run along the west bank of the river. Granite and decomposed schist drain sharply and reflect heat, ripening these late whites while the continental swing between warm days and cool nights preserves freshness. Roussanne brings perfume and acidity, Marsanne weight and a nutty richness. The wine is fermented and aged nine months in oak barrels, with lees contact and slow oxygen exchange adding a rounded, creamy texture, while a measured touch of oak lends light toast without dominating. Expect a pale gold colour, a nose of white flowers, honey, white peach and a gentle nutty edge, and a palate that is broad and supple yet carries a fresh, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a larger glass.
