A soft Guatemalan solera rum from the Botran house, column distilled and built in tiers, leaning on caramel, vanilla and toasted oak with a sweet, chocolatey finish, smooth and gently sweet at 40%.
Description
Botran Anejo Sistema Solera 18 comes from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala in the Spanish style: a molasses-based rum distilled on column still for a light, clean base, then aged through a solera where older and younger rums blend together. The number marks the solera system rather than a guaranteed minimum age, a point worth keeping straight in this category.
Because the new-make is relatively neutral, the wood and the house style do most of the work, giving soft caramel, vanilla and toasted oak with a sweet, gently chocolatey finish. It reads as a smooth, sweet-leaning sipper, a touch drier and more budget-friendly than the richest names in the school but firmly in the rounded camp. At an easy 40% it is mellow and undemanding, equally at home as a casual pour, a dessert match or an easy bottle to share.
