Bodegas Frontonio makes this organic Garnacha from old vines in Valdejalón, near Zaragoza. Vinified for freshness and aged nine months in concrete, it shows ripe cherry, blackberry and a peppery, herbal lift, with no oak to mask the fruit.
Description
Botijo Rojo Garnacha comes from Bodegas Frontonio, a project set up to raise the profile of Valdejalón and its old Garnacha vineyards near Zaragoza in Aragón. The winery farms around 25 hectares organically across a range of ages, exposures and soils, in a Mediterranean to continental climate where hot days and cool nights give ripe fruit with retained acidity. This is the youthful, fruit driven side of their old vine Garnacha. The grapes are vinified for freshness and aged nine months in concrete tanks rather than oak, an inert vessel that allows slow micro oxygenation and gentle textural rounding while keeping the fruit clean and the wine free of barrel character. The result is a bright pomegranate red. The nose is full of ripe cherry and blackberry, with red currant, a peppery edge and a hint of dried herb typical of Garnacha grown in warm, stony Aragonese sites. The palate is juicy and supple, the tannin soft, the finish fresh and savoury. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, a touch cool. It is an easy match for grilled white meats, charcuterie and tomato based dishes.
