Bosque de Matasnos grows this Syrah in Ribera del Duero, named for the cleared forest that once stood there. Twelve months in barrel give a deep, spiced red of ripe black cherry, plum, pepper and violet.
Description
Bosque de Matasnos sits in D.O. Ribera del Duero, the high plateau of Castilla y León where Syrah is an unusual choice among the region's Tempranillo. The winery takes its name from the forest cleared here in the 1960s to win farmland. The altitude and continental climate bring hot days and cold nights, and that wide diurnal range lets this Syrah ripen to 15% alcohol while keeping its acidity and aromatic lift. The wine spends twelve months in barrel, where measured oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds vanilla, smoke and a savoury depth alongside the fruit. It pours a deep cherry red with violet glints. The nose is ripe black cherry and plum with black pepper, liquorice and a floral note. The palate is full and intense, with dark fruit, peppery spice and firm but polished tannins carrying a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meats, game and strong cheeses.
