Description
Boscarelli is a respected family estate in Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, home of Vino Nobile, the historic Sangiovese-based wine recognised for centuries for its quality. This Riserva is built mainly on Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, with a little Colorino for colour and depth, grown on the clay and sandy soils around the town. The higher altitude and wide swing between warm days and cool nights help the grapes keep acidity and develop perfume while ripening, giving a wine that is structured but not heavy at 13.5%. As a Riserva it ages eighteen months in oak, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the firm Sangiovese tannins and adds spice, leather and savoury complexity. The colour is intense ruby and the nose shows fresh cherry and sour cherry with plum, tobacco and dried herbs. The palate is medium to full bodied, with firm, fine-grained tannin, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 17C in a large glass, decanting an hour ahead. It is a classic match for grilled and roast red meats.
