Description
Bodegas Borsao is the cooperative behind much of the vineyard in Campo de Borja, a warm region in the province of Zaragoza that built its reputation on Garnacha. Zarihs takes a different route, made entirely from Syrah, a grape that thrives in the area's heat and stony soils. The warm continental climate ripens the fruit fully, which is reflected in the wine's 15 percent alcohol and its concentration of dark fruit. After fermentation the wine spends twelve months in American oak barrels, which round the tannins through slow oxidation and add a layer of sweet spice, vanilla and toast to the ripe fruit. The colour is deep and dark. The nose is intense, dominated by black fruit, blackberry above all, with smoky, peppery and gently spiced nuances. The palate is full and warming, with ripe tannins, generous fruit and a long, spiced finish carrying a hint of dark chocolate and liquorice. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees. It suits robust dishes, from grilled and barbecued beef to roast lamb and hard mature cheeses.
