Description
Boris Champy farms in the Hautes-Côtes of Burgundy, working biodynamically after a career that took in Napa Valley and the cellars of Louis Latour and Clos des Lambrays. Gamay Fin is his Coteaux Bourguignons, a regional Burgundy made from Gamay grown on the limestone and clay soils of the higher, cooler reaches of the Côte. The altitude and cool climate hold acidity and keep the wine fresh and light, while the limestone subsoil lends a mineral lift. The wine is made naturally, with vegan handling and minimal intervention, and is aged twelve months in oak barrels, which round the texture gently without adding obvious wood flavour. The colour is bright ruby. The nose leads with raspberry, red cherry and red currant over violet, black pepper and a touch of earth. The palate is light to medium bodied, with soft tannins, juicy acidity and a fresh, peppery finish. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, and a light chill suits it on a warm day. It is an easy match for charcuterie, roast poultry and pork.
