The Wolftrap is the everyday red from Boekenhoutskloof, one of South Africa’s finest estates in the Franschhoek Valley. A Rhône style blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre and a splash of Viognier, it is full and savoury, with dark berry fruit, pepper and dried herbs.
Description
Boekenhoutskloof is a leading estate in the Franschhoek Valley of the Western Cape, founded by Marc Kent in 1993 and among the oldest wineries in the area. The Wolftrap is its approachable red blend, built in the southern Rhône mould from Syrah and Mourvèdre with a small amount of Viognier. The Western Cape's warm, sunny climate ripens these Mediterranean varieties fully, while cooling influences from the South Coast and altitude help retain freshness and aromatic lift. Syrah brings dark fruit and peppery spice, Mourvèdre adds structure, gamey depth and firm tannin, and the white Viognier, co fermented in the traditional Côte Rôtie manner, fixes colour and lifts the aromatics with a floral top note. The blend is built for drinkability rather than weight, with the fruit kept fresh and savoury. The wine is deep ruby with aromas of dark berries, plum, cracked black pepper and dried Cape herbs, with a faint smoky edge. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe red and dark fruit, a peppery, herbal savour and supple tannins, closing on an earthy note. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It is an easy match for grilled meats, sausages and tomato based dishes.
