Bodega Cerrón makes this organic Monastrell in D.O. Jumilla from a family estate worked since 1895. Just six months in foudres keeps it fresh and bright, with blackcurrant, ripe plum and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
Bodega Cerrón is a family operation rooted in the high country of Jumilla, in Spain's Murcia region, with ties to local winegrowing since 1895. From their base at Fuente-Álamo, in Albacete, they recover abandoned vineyards under organic and biodynamic practice, aiming for balance between acidity, alcohol and fruit. El Tiempo que nos une is their young Monastrell, a thick-skinned variety suited to the dry, sun-baked continental conditions of the upper Jumilla zone, where wide swings between day and night temperatures slow ripening and hold acidity in the fruit. The wine spends six months in large foudres rather than small barrels, a gentle, low-extraction ageing that keeps oak influence to a minimum and lets the grape speak. The result is a deep, youthful red with blackcurrant, ripe plum and a thread of black pepper and dried herbs over an earthy base. Tannins are present but supple, the body medium, the finish savoury. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, ideally after a short decant. It suits grilled pork, roast chicken with herbs, mushroom dishes and hard sheep cheeses.
