Bodega Cerrón makes this organic Monastrell and Syrah blend in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia, from old vines at 800 to 850 metres. Barrel aged and ripe at 15 percent, it shows dark plum, pepper and a savoury, herbal depth.
Description
Bodega Cerrón is a family project at Fuente-Álamo, recovering abandoned old vines set between mountains at 800 to 850 metres and farming them organically. El Sentido de la Vida blends Monastrell with Syrah in D.O. Jumilla, in the Murcia region. The altitude is the key to this wine, since cool mountain nights and a wide day-to-night temperature swing hold acidity in a hot, dry climate, so the wine keeps freshness and structure despite ripening to 15 percent. The limestone rich soils and old bush vines give low yields and concentrated fruit, and barrel ageing provides slow oxygen exchange that softens the tannin and adds texture. The wine is deep purple with aromas of dark plum and red berries over black pepper, dried herbs and a liquorice note from the Monastrell, with Syrah adding violet and spice. The palate is full bodied with ripe, firm tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees in a large glass, with a short decant. It pairs with grilled red meat, lamb and spiced dishes.
