Blau Verd comes from Can Blau, the Montsant project of Grupo Juan Gil. A blend of Cariñena and Garnacha aged four months in oak, it shows ripe red and dark fruit, pepper and liquorice over the schist soils that define the region.
Description
Can Blau is the Montsant venture of Grupo Juan Gil, the Murcia-based house that moved into Catalonia in 2003 to apply its experience to a new terroir. Blau Verd blends Cariñena and Garnacha, the two grapes at the heart of Montsant, grown on the licorella schist and clay soils that ring the neighbouring Priorat. These poor, stony soils force the vines to root deep and yield small, concentrated berries, while the hot, dry Mediterranean climate drives full ripeness and the wine's depth of colour and fruit. Ageing is short, just four months in oak, which softens the edges and adds a light touch of spice while keeping the fruit fresh and primary. The wine is deep ruby with a youthful purple cast. The nose is generous, with ripe red and dark fruit, black pepper, liquorice and an earthy, mineral note from the schist. The palate is full and rounded, with ripe tannin and good acidity carrying a long, savoury finish. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees with grilled meats, lamb or hearty vegetable dishes.
